Preservation of Kahlil Gibran Sculpture
Date
2024
The conservation of the bronze sculpture by Kahlil Gibran (1922-2008) was undertaken in accordance with the principles outlined in the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice, emphasizing minimal intervention, material compatibility, and the preservation of original material and surface character. The project began with the careful cleaning of the stone pedestal using conservation-appropriate solutions designed to remove biological growth while avoiding damage to the substrate. Accretions and corrosion on the bronze were then gently reduced through controlled cleaning methods, allowing for the stabilization of the surface. Following thorough preparation, the sculpture was repatinated to restore the intended dark brown finish consistent with the artist’s original aesthetic. The treatment concluded with the application of multiple layers of protective microcrystalline wax, providing a sacrificial barrier against environmental exposure while maintaining the sculpture’s visual integrity. This work represents a conservation-focused approach that prioritizes the long-term preservation of both the bronze sculpture and its stone base.
